Saints Alive Newsletter     June 2009

Dear Friends

There are so many things happening in the ministry that it is hard to choose what to include in the newsletter. I have to keep it short because of the increased costs to print and mail the letter, as well as being forced by the same costs to send it only to those who do support the ministry.

A bit of sad news. Our good friend and fellow worker, John L. Smith, passed away in April. He was a fearless zealot and worked relentlessly in the harvest fields, bringing Mormons to the truth and salvation of the Real Christ. He will be greatly missed.  John was one of those quiet heroes of the faith, always in the harvest field at work. Read a few of his articles here.

In honor of John L. and his life’s work, we have agreed with his Board and family to absorb his ministry within Saints Alive. His life work should be continued. We will be in Marlow, OK in mid-June to meet with his family and those who worked with him to make the transition.

I want to thank those of you who have sent in gifts this month. We are just keeping our head above water and every gift is a blessing It would be great if some of you would send in a special gift this week.  You remain in my prayers always.

We will be incurring a lot of expenses this month as we transfer John L. Smith’s ministry to ours and notify his mailing list and supporters.  I ask that you pray about being part of those who help cover the extra costs of such a special project.

Your Brother in Christ,

Ed Decker

Over 68 Years in Ministry

17 Years in Utah

Over 50 Years Studying Mormonism

15 Years as a Baptist Pastor

Mormons posthumously baptize Obama's mother

President Barack Obama's mother, Stanley Ann Dunham, who died in 1995, was baptized posthumously into The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints last year during her son's campaign, according to Salt Lake City-based researcher Helen Radkey.

The ritual, known as "baptism for the dead," was done June 4, 2008, in the Provo Utah temple, and another LDS temple rite, known as the "endowment," was performed in the same temple on June 11, said Radkey, who found the record while doing research in the LDS Family History Library in Salt Lake City

President Obama's mom isn't alone.

George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin, in fact all of the signers of the Declaration of Independence and even Christopher Columbus -- all have been baptized posthumously into the LDS Church.

LDS Apologist: Book of Mormon a literary device: not true historical account

LDS apologist, Van Hale, on his SLC radio program, discussed the Book of Mormon with a caller. Van explained how he had come to the conclusion that the Book of Mormon is more of a literary device to draw people to the divine restoration rather than an account of literal ancient history.

I must be getting Old

And kind of slowed down lately but I do remember when the Missionaries gave me a BOM and asked me to follow the admonition in BOM: Moroni 10:4 and pray to know that the BOM was true. and I would know that it was and that it meant the church was true. They didn't tell me that it was a divinely inspired book of fiction that contained a call for my righteousness and membership in the church.. I would have preferred reading Pilgrim's Progress.

This divinely inspired book of fiction concept totally kills the whole Christ in the Americas scenario of Mormonism; the LDS proclaimed origin of the American Indian nations and validates the DNA proof that the BOM is a book of fiction..

Mormonism and the Lodge

Glen Cook, a Salt Lake criminal defense attorney and Brigham Young University law school graduate, is believed to be the first member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to be elected grand master in Utah

"There is no question that elements of the (LDS temple) endowment and Masonic ritual are similar," Cook said. "The question for faithful Latter-day Saints is whether that makes a difference.

Church founder Joseph Smith and his brother, Hyrum, were members of the Masonic lodge in Nauvoo, Ill., in the early 1840s, and historians have written in detail about the role of fellow Masons in the murder of the two men in June 1844. Smith's successor, President Brigham Young, and the three succeeding presidents of the church all were made Masons in the Nauvoo Lodge, as were many who presided in church hierarchy during and following Joseph Smith's death. ………..

From a report by Carrie A. Moore Deseret Morning News Published: March 29, 2008

If you ever wondered where all the thumbs to the throat, secret signs, tokens and handgrips come from in the LDS Temple ritual, just visit your local Masonic Lodge. It’s all there, just the same, even that special Five points of fellowship they do at the veil.  LDS friends: It does make a difference and it  will send you to hell.

A Note about John L. Smith

By John L. Smith

I’m a smaller than average fellow. I grew up on a small farm here near Marlow, Oklahoma.

My mother taught a country school for a few years. When she was expecting my little brother, she had to give up her position as a teacher. Expectant mothers were not to serve as public school teachers in those days.

For the next year or so I was her only pupil. There were no private schools in those days. I cannot remember when I could not read!

I recently attended the reunion of my college class at Oklahoma Baptist University. I was amazed at how that bunch has aged!

Since my college days I’ve conducted 50 two to three week revivals. I’ve spent 54 weeks in Home Mission Board "World Missionary Conferences," back in the days when we had them. I was an Associational Missionary in Oklahoma. We now call them Director’s of Missions. (I was only 22 at the time.)

I pastored about 15 years. Part of that was in Oklahoma and New Mexico. In 1951 we moved to Utah and I pastored about six years. Then for 11½ years we traveled up to 322 days of the year, speaking in churches, colleges, and seminaries, from coast to coast.

Mormonism has been my life for more than 50 years! I have letters and other proofs of the impact I made during the years.

At the risk of appearing boastful and vain, I want to mention some of the plaudits that I have received.

Here’s a letter from a California Baptist pastor. He wrote, "This letter is to give to you the highest recommendation of John L. Smith. I have been privileged to have Bro. Smith in my home and in my church and hold him in highest esteem."

In 1987 I attended an annual meeting of the Associated Ministries of Capstone. [Ed: We honored him at our Capstone Conference]

I was the first to receive the annual plaque for, "Recognition of his lifetime of tireless service in defense of the Faith…."

The pastor of our church here in Marlow on the occasion of my fiftieth wedding anniversary in 1990 (my wife of 50 years passed away in 1991.) Several years later I remarried.

The then pastor wrote, "Second, we want to express our gratitude for your faithfulness to Christ and his church. Many retired preachers grow old and critical and angry. Others create problems in the fellowship and some simply drop out. You two are shining examples of what God wants all his servants to be following retirement. You have a sweet spirit; you work hard in the life of the church and you are very supportive of the pastor’s leadership." He thought I was retiring! He was wrong.

A pastor in Louisiana wrote, "One of the finest persons our church has had visit the pulpit is John L. Smith….(his) message is his mission. He speaks without bigotry or animosity, yet in honesty, frankness and love….We shall ever be indebted.

Our current pastor wrote, "I have known John L. Smith for almost six years. For the last three I have had the distinct privilege of serving as his pastor. John L. Smith is a man of integrity and honor. I have reason to believe he is the kind of man he professes to be.

"Although John L. has dedicated his life to a very particular area of ministry, he has a very particular ministry, he has continued with dedicated service and support of the local church…."

May God continue to bless our ministry. Friends like those mentioned in this article have made our ministry memorable!

Latter-day Saints and the Cross
by John L. Smith

I've been asked several times to discuss "the Cross" and Mormonism. Surprisingly, Bruce R. McConkie, Mormonism's outstanding writer on Mormonism's teachings, has little to say about the Cross.

In Mormon Doctrine, (1966, pg. 172) he speaks of those who would give symbolic meaning to the cross and that "In succeeding centuries, the churches which came into being through an intermingling of pagan concepts with the true apostolic Christianity developed the practice of using symbolic crosses in the architecture of their buildings and as jewelry. . . ."

McConkie says nothing about the Garden of Gethsemane under that subject. It is a well-known fact that Mormons speak of Christ's suffering in Gethsemane as though it was greater than that on the cross. On page 74 of McConkie's A New Witness for the Articles of Faith, he says: "The greatest suffering ever endured by man or God was in Gethsemane. . . ."

He declares on page 109 that "This sacrifice, which only a God could make, took place in Gethsemane. . . ." (ibid., see also D & C 19:18). This passage says "Which suffering caused myself even God, the greatest of all to tremble because of pain, and to bleed at every pore, and to suffer both body and spirit - and would that I might not drink the bitter cup, and shrink - "

Remember, Mormons believe their books (Book of Mormon, Doctrine & Covenants and Pearl of Great Price are far more dependable than the Bible. Therefore, they heed them rather than the Bible. Remember too, that they recognize only the King James Version of the Bible

MORMONISM’S GOD WAS ONCE A MAN:

 Is Your God a man?

“God himself was one as we are now, and is an exalted man...I say, if you were to see him today, you would see him like a man in form...like yourselves in all the person, image, and very form as a man...He was once a man like us; yea, that God himself, the Father of us all, dwelt on an earth.”  (Joseph Smith, History of the Church,  Vol. 6, p. 305.)

THE BIBLE:   God was never a man.  He created man!  God has been God from all eternity to all eternity.  (Psalm 41:13, 90:2, 102:25-27;  Romans 1:22-23)   Jesus never changes  (Heb 13:8; Rev. 1:13-18)

Islam says Jesus Not Son of God

Mo-ham-mad claims that Jesus Christ is not the Son of God.

Qur'an 9:30 And the Jews say: Ezra is the son of Allah; and the Christians say: The Messiah is the son of Allah. These are the words of their mouths. They imitate the saying of those who disbelieved before. Allah's curse be on them! How they are turned away!

Correction: The Holy Bible states that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.

2 John 1:9 Whoever transgresses and does not abide in the doctrine of Christ does not have God. He who abides in the doctrine of Christ has both the Father and the Son.
